Abstract:
Sedimentary basins are structural-stratigraphic units where sediments have accumulated and preserved over millions of years, constituting reservoirs of strategic resources such as hydrocarbons, water and minerals; others are useful for the permanent storage of Hydrogen or carbon dioxide. Its classification mainly considers sedimentary activity, the degree of deformation, the type of fill that makes up the sedimentary sequences and the tectonic context.
In Mexico, more than fifty sedimentary basins are recognized (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic), with significant variations in preservation, thickness, geological evolution and natural resources. On crystalline rock basements, basins associated with separation processes of tectonic plates, subduction zones, transform fault zones and others in mixed or hybrid tectonic environments evolved in the national territory.
The E-Book integrates and systematizes dispersed information on the Mexican sedimentary basins, incorporating recent advances and data that are difficult to access. Descriptions are presented by geological age and location, highlighting its tectonostratigraphic evolution, its economic potential and its classification. It is a methodological proposal that combines active educational approaches, digital technologies and geological modeling, contributing to the training of professionals in Earth Sciences with skills to address energy and environmental challenges under sustainability criteria. It was prepared with the participation of seventy authors within the framework of the Support Program for Projects to Innovate and Improve Education, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, a work that was evaluated by the Editorial Committee of the Faculty of Engineering and published in November 2025, it is freely accessible in the repository of digital publications of the Faculty of Engineering.
The work represents a contribution to the knowledge of the sedimentary basins of Mexico that aims to contribute to the strengthening of the teaching-learning process, in accordance with the Study Plans and Programs of the Earth Sciences Careers and related areas, through deep reflection by the students so that they understand the origin and evolution of the sedimentary basins, their different processes and their subsoil natural resources, to achieve significant learning, both in courses in person, online or remotely, so it is teaching material that will help increase terminal efficiency and reduce school dropouts.
