Abstract:
The Lay Dam Formation of the Talladega Group of eastern Alabama represents a thick (>2 km) metasedimentary suite within the western Blue Ridge province of the Appalachian Mountains. The Silurian to Devonian sedimentary protolith of the Lay Dam Formation represents turbidites and diamictites that filled a basin along the margin of Laurentia. New thermochronology data suggest that complex uplift was underway by the Devonian to the southeast and northwest of the Talladega basin. We present U-Pb zircon and apatite geochronology from the Lay Dam Formation to explore the provenance of clastic sediment into the Talladega basin during the Devonian. U-Pb apatite results may also provide estimates for metamorphic temperatures and timing of the Lay Dam Formation during peak burial conditions and early exhumation.
