Abstract:
Recent experience has shown that characterization of PFAS distribution, migration and treatment in the environment is distinctly more complex than characterization of most environmental contaminants. To wrap up the session, a panel discussion involving all session speakers and presentations from this session will address commonalities and perspectives on technical topics that are important for advancing Federal PFAS remediation projects. Based on the presentations provided by session speakers, a set of questions will be developed that will initiate a moderated discussion among session presenter of lessons learned from recent characterization projects with the goal of improving and focusing future characterization efforts while minimizing past mistakes to obtain appropriate site information characterizing PFAS distribution, migration, and processes controlling PFAS attenuation and fate. The goal of this discussion is to provide information for project planning that is valuable for moving PFAS remediation projects forward toward site remediation. Throughout the discussion, emphasis will be place on hydrological, geological and geochemical aspects of site characterization and how site hydrology, geology and geochemistry of PFAS migration and retention influence decision making for both interim and final PFAS response actions. Specifically, the panel discussion will address successes and challenges in site investigations, environmental sequence stratigraphy, PFAS transport modeling, containment and remediation technologies, the relationship between interim and final remedial actions, and challenges due to evolving science and regulation.
