Abstract:
X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) has revolutionized paleontological research, significantly advancing the understanding of ancient life and evolution. This innovative imaging technology goes beyond traditional surface analysis by non-destructively calculating the attenuation of X-rays as they pass through materials of varying densities within a sample. This capability allows for detailed three-dimensional reconstructions of the internal anatomical features of fossil specimens, revealing insights that would otherwise be impossible to infer without destructive sampling. Ongoing advancements in micro-CT have improved spatial resolution, imaging speed, and data processing capabilities, enhancing the visualization and analysis of the fossil record. Despite its benefits, micro-CT methodologies can pose a steep learning curve for researchers. This presentation will first address the latest technological advances in micro-CT applications, highlighting how these innovations are reshaping our interpretations of extinct organisms and their evolutionary pathways. The second part will focus on essential aspects of the CT scanning process, such as sample preparation, optimal mounting strategies, and tailored scan parameters for specific specimen types. Best practices will be discussed to help researchers maximize data fidelity and ensure reliable results, ultimately enhancing the quality and impact of paleontological research through the application of micro-CT.
