Abstract:
A subsurface well-log study of the Upper Cretaceous Graneros, Greenhorn, Carlile and Niobrara Formations was conducted across Dundy, Hitchcock, Lincoln, Hayes, Chase, and Perkins counties in southwestern Nebraska. In this study thirty-two (32) well-logs were used to create a grid of well-log cross sections across the study area. From this isopach maps of each unit and structure contour maps of the base of the Niobrara Formation and the X bentonite marker were developed.
These maps revealed a southeastward shallowing of the major stratigraphic units, with the X bentonite marker reaching its greatest depth of 3,100 feet in the northwest. Thickness variations reveal a southward thickening of the Niobrara Formation, a southwestward thickening of the Greenhorn Formation, and a southeastward thickening of the Graneros Shale.
