Abstract:
The Southern Ocean is a highly dynamic region that is heavily impacted by frequent and intense storms. Additionally, it plays a dominant role in the global Carbon cycle as it connects the carbon-rich deep ocean with the surface, allowing for a potential exchange of CO2 with the atmosphere. However, the role of storminess in Southern Ocean carbon fluxes is not well understood. In part, this lack of knowledge is due to difficulties in high-frequency sampling within strong atmospheric events throughout all seasons. As such, the output from a coupled climate model becomes necessary for resolving storms. Using a novel dataset of Lagrangian drifters advected in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), we quantify the impact of storms at a sub-diurnal scale across the Southern Ocean. Here we present the effects of these extratropical storms specifically on surface Carbon and Eddy Kinetic Energy (EKE). These variables are a part of the larger story of how storms that affect the Southern Ocean alone can impact the larger global carbon budget.
