Abstract:
The GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) beamlines, located at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and operated by the University of Chicago, provide members of the Earth and environmental science community with the tools and training required to take advantage of numerous synchrotron-based analytical techniques. The APS has just completed an upgrade of the storage ring that has resulted in unprecedented X-ray beam brightness. GSECARS is leveraging this new source to both improve well-established techniques and develop new ones. GSECARS has developed and continues to develop in-situ techniques that provide geochemists with the ability to follow reactions occurring in real time and in controlled environments. The ability to focus intense and penetrating X-ray beams on single crystal surfaces and powder samples allows measurements to be performed that reveal the atomic and molecular structure of a mineral surface in contact with fluids as well as track the structural evolution of bulk crystal powders under varying solution and temperature conditions. At GSECARS we partner with the Earth science community to develop custom sample environments, instrumentation, measurement, and analysis technologies that enable rapid resolution of pressing scientific problems. These collaborative partnerships have been key to driving innovation at both the 13-BM-C bending magnet and 13-ID-C insertion device experiment endstations. With the completion of the APS-U, GSECARS plans to use this new source, including enhanced X-ray coherence, to leverage these partnerships in developing novel measurement capabilities previously not possible.
