Abstract:
Traditional pedagogical approaches in STEM often prioritize memorization strategies like skill-and-drill techniques, which may hinder deeper conceptual learning—especially in spatial disciplines such as geoscience. This presentation explores the integration of brain-based learning principles, culturally responsive pedagogy, neurodivergent methodologies, and the purposeful use of AI to design more inclusive and effective geoscience curricula.
Drawing from neuroscience and educational psychology, this work emphasizes rigorous yet creative learning environments that honor diverse cognitive profiles. Neurodivergent-inclusive methods, such as multimodal instruction and executive function supports, are presented as essential tools to expand accessibility and foster student engagement. Culturally responsive practices call for authentic, human-centered interaction and relevance, recognizing that certain dimensions of learning cannot be replicated by technology.
The authors present evaluation criteria and assignment design rubrics that help educators determine when AI tools may be pedagogically appropriate, and when traditional or alternative methods serve better. Ultimately, this balanced framework encourages the thoughtful blending of traditional strategies, inclusive design, and AI technologies to nurture deep thinking, spatial reasoning, and a sense of belonging in geoscience classrooms.
