Nutrient availability plays a fundamental role in regulating biological productivity, ecosystem structure, and biogeochemical cycling in freshwater environments. Nitrogen and phosphorus are key nutrients that influence ecosystem productivity and can exhibit unique behavior in glacier-influenced landscapes. Recent research suggests that glacial ice, meltwater, and newly formed proglacial lakes can serve as important sources and reservoirs of phosphorus, influencing downstream nutrient availability. This study investigates phosphorus concentrations in glacial ice, proglacial lakes, and rivers across Iceland. Water samples collected from sites representing different stages of the hydrologic continuum were analyzed in the field for phosphate concentrations. Spatial patterns in phosphorus availability were evaluated to assess how nutrient concentrations vary from glacial sources to downstream aquatic environments. Findings from this work will improve our understanding of nutrient cycling and phosphorus dynamics in glacier-influenced regions and provide insight into the potential effects of continued glacier retreat on freshwater ecosystems in Iceland.
