Abstract:
Iceland's volcanic landscape provides a unique natural laboratory for investigating how basaltic lava compositions vary across space and time. This study examines geochemical differences among basaltic lava flows of varying ages across Iceland to evaluate patterns of geochemical variability and magmatic evolution. Representative lava flow samples spanning approximately 10,000 years were analyzed in the field using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) to determine major and trace element abundances. Elemental concentrations and selected geochemical ratios are being compared to identify spatial and temporal trends in basalt composition. The results will contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing geochemical variability in Iceland's volcanic systems and provide insights into the evolution of one of the world's most active volcanic landscapes.
