As friends of Brad Sageman who are not listed as a coauthors on any publication, we wish to point out his influence in steering the research directions of other colleagues involved in Cretaceous paleoclimatic records. A specific example is the year 2000 Sageman Miniconference at Northwestern University where Brad’s feedback on group presentations catalyzed a new focus on Cretaceous stable isotopic records from the tropics (Suarez et al. 2009, doi: 10.1130/B26453.1; Suarez et al., 2010, doi: 10.2110/jsr.2010.048; and Suarez et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.palaeo.2011.05.027). Moreover, colleague interactions at the Sageman Miniconference with the late Mark Pagani led to investigations of integrated oxygen & hydrogen isotopic records from the Cretaceous Arctic (Ross et al, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1144/SP498-2018-134; Ludvigson et al, 2022, https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3263/12/4/143; and Andrzejewski et al., 2023, https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3263/13/9/273). Brad Sageman’s career-long leadership investigating the global-change record of the Cretaceous OAE 2 inspired an effort at the Kansas Geological Survey to carry out carbon isotope chemostratigraphic studies of Albian-Turonian strata in long-line cores in northern Kansas recently culminating in the report of Andrzejewski et al., 2025 (https://doi.org/10.5724/gcs.38.001). That work focused attention on the local expression of the Albian-Cenomanian OAE 1d and the Mid-Cenomanian Event along the cratonic margin of the Cretaceous Western Interior Basin. Continuing studies of these global-change events in newly pulled cores in Nebraska and Kansas are leading to a deeper understanding of that record. One particular outcome involves diagenetic studies of cone-in-cone calcite structures associated with the Mid-Cenomanian Event that indicate formation as offshore fresh-water seeps.
