Will Tunguska’s Evil Twin Return on Halloween 2026? Science and Skepticism in a Clickbait World

Abstract:
Did the Tunguska object have an unseen companion that missed the Earth in 1908? Is this hidden cosmic nightmare on its way back to finish the job? As we celebrate this Halloween behind our masks and in our costumes, will it unleash the ultimate trick-or-treat from hell?
For nearly a century, the mainstream narrative has been this: If the Tunguska space rock had arrived 4 hours and 47 minutes later, it would have destroyed St. Petersburg. New orbital calculations have revealed the stunning truth. If it had been mere minutes late, it could have destroyed a city in the US or Canada. A couple minutes after that it would have missed Earth altogether, only to return and menace our planet in the future. That time could be now. Other parts of a broken space rock could also come back, like the formation-flying fragments of Shoemaker-Levy 9 did when they all struck Jupiter in 1994.
The Tunguska trajectory suggests it was from the Taurid meteor stream, which crosses Earth’s path twice a year. “Halloween fireballs” come from this stream during its autumn crossing. Published models suggest the existence of a Taurid swarm in an approximate 61-year resonance with earth. Two 61-year periods after the 1908 Taurid crossing will be 2030. The fall crossing would be 4 years earlier, within a few weeks of October 31, 2026.
The previous paragraphs of this abstract are written in clickbait style. The idea of a dark Tunguska companion is pure speculation. The Taurid resonant swarm model does, however, predict close approaches of a hypothetical swarm in 2032 and 2036. There is no evidence for a concentration of large objects, but there is no reason not to search for them in 2032 as a precaution. The Tunguska object’s Earth encounter was six years before the hypothetical swarm, and there is no theoretical basis for it to have the same resonant period.
This idea is simply a speculative “what if?” (much like the St. Petersburg counterfactual was a playful, but incorrect, idea first published by astronomer I.S. Astapowitsch in a 1934 version of modern-day clickbait).
This poster will present arguments, pro and con, about whether we should try to exploit the clickbait industry to provide accurate scientific and skeptical information to the public.
