Abstract:
Trace metals are naturally present in soils, but agricultural practices can alter their distribution and accumulation. In Wisconsin dairy systems, feed concentrates and mineral supplements often contain elevated concentrations of Cu and Zn, along with trace amounts of Cr, As, and Cd. These elements can enter manure streams and accumulate in agricultural soils through repeated manure application. Despite Wisconsin's prominence as a dairy-producing state, relatively little research has evaluated long-term trace metal accumulation in manure-managed soils. This study establishes a baseline assessment of trace metal concentrations in western Wisconsin. Soil samples were collected from long-term manure-amended fields, non-manured agricultural fields, and non-agricultural undisturbed reference sites. Corn plant samples were collected from agricultural treatments, while manure and groundwater samples were obtained to evaluate trace metal distribution throughout the agroecosystem. Samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to quantify trace metal concentrations. This baseline dataset provides critical insight into trace metal occurrence and accumulation patterns within Wisconsin dairy production systems. The findings will support future monitoring efforts, inform nutrient management decisions, and improve understanding of trace metal cycling in agricultural landscapes.
