Abstract:
The Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program (GVP) has been accumulating, archiving, and summarizing international volcano data for scientists and the public since 1968. There are numerous sources of volcanic information on the internet, however many are not credible or are official agencies with a legal monitoring mandate, and can contribute to misinformation and confusion about volcanic activity. GVP posts source links of official volcano observatories civil protection agencies, and Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs). In addition, sources may include official social media sites and links to other key information, such as special eruption reports, report archives, and Volcano Alert Level systems. Searching for official information, especially in a foreign language, is challenging because webpages don’t always translate correctly and the flow of information at different levels of government is not always clear to the public. Another challenge is keeping all links up to date, because web addresses may change or be removed. The source list helps the public, including residents, international travelers, scientists, and the press, know where to go for official information. The GVP source links are an easily accessible resource organized by country that keep the general public informed about volcanic activity.
