Successful training of the next generation of geoscience leaders is accomplished by continuously changing and improving outreach efforts to recruit undergraduate students, including those with different skillsets and disciplinary knowledge. The University of Texas at Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences (JSG) aims to expand participation in the geosciences by offering the NextStep Geosciences program for undergraduate students. This summer undergraduate research experience, held over 9 weeks, provides STEM students the opportunity for hands-on research, technical training, and professional development. This blended program aims to prepare the participants for a future professional career in the geosciences, especially those interested in graduate school. The recruiting methods for this program focus on broadening the participant applicants to other STEM departments (particularly computer science, mathematics, and engineering) to bring novel perspectives to and advance the capabilities of the geoscience workforce. The program structure can be divided into two main components, research mentorship and professional development. Each participant is mentored through a novel research topic by a leading geoscientist in order to gain the skills to pursue real-world geological discovery and tackle complex problems. Simultaneously, participants engage in workshops on practical research skills (understanding journal articles, presenting research topics, and writing an abstract), technical skills (Python and data analysis short courses), and non-technical competencies (receiving constructive feedback, building a resume, and managing stress). The technical and non-technical workshops are designed to be interactive with group activities to encourage the development of social and professional skills that lead to success in future careers. This presentation will discuss the goals and structure of the NextStep Geosciences program with both research engagement and professional development components, recruiting techniques, and current successes in expanding participation in the geosciences. The NextStep Geosciences program seeks to mentor the next generation of geoscience leaders.
